Biography
Nacha Mendez has spent decades weaving together the musical traditions of the American Southwest, Latin America, and the Mediterranean world into a sound that is entirely her own. Mendez is a nationally recognized singer, guitarist, and actor whose voice carries the deep roots of her Gila Apache and Chicana heritage. She is an enrolled member of The Chihene Nde Nation of New Mexico. Born in Chicago and raised in La Union, New Mexico, she has spent decades weaving together the musical traditions of the American Southwest, Latin America, and the Mediterranean world into a sound that is entirely her own. Her performances have taken her across the United States and to the stages of Spain, Italy, Japan, Greece, Lisbon, Mexico, and the UK where audiences have embraced her singular blend of flamenco-inflected folk, corridos, rancheras, boleros, and original compositions. She sings in Spanish and English, honoring the full breadth of her ancestry with every song.
Nacha has been a fixture in the New Mexico arts community for over three decades. She has performed at major festivals including the Frida Fest in Santa Fe, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and numerous international venues. Her work has been featured in New Mexico Magazine, El Palacio Magazine, Santa Fe Magazine, and recognized by arts organizations across the region.
Beyond music, Nacha has appeared in film and theater productions. She brings the same emotional depth and cultural authenticity to her acting work that defines her music — a presence that is both commanding and deeply human.
She is also the founder of the Nacha Mendez Music Scholarship, which supports young musicians from Indigenous and Latinx communities in New Mexico, ensuring that the next generation has access to the training and opportunities that shaped her own path.
